If you are investigative unit, then you fight to keep Shilen faith pure and rid of influences of other races as well. You put stop to cultist activity if it is on conflict with what Shilen teaches. In similar way you put stop to other internal church corruption. Things such as followers of faith associating with light elves, co operation with followers of einhasad whose goddess Shilen eternally hates, and other atrocities that might happen inside the church fall under your category as well.
Just do not make the mistake of not taking care of everything your orders proclamation stands for. You are fighting for well being of Shilen church, none else. In the end it makes very little difference wether you kill the light elf maiden for tainting the holy place with its presence or wether it is killed as part of a ritual no?.
It could not be that you somehow... prefer events and happenings that allow you to look "good" to most for what you are doing, now could it? Or that people would feel ackward doing events that really pique peoples characters loyality towards church and what it can lead them to do, now could it?

This has become quite an interesting thread. I have a few thoughts floating through my mind that I want to put down, but I want to organize them first.

As the only light elf in the Abyssal Guard (well, the only one not an alt.) I think this depends primarily on their religious association. Kaelir follows Shillen pretty exclusively. Wether she entirely understands the ramifactions of what that means remains a mystery. As with her association with the Shillen Temple - she's considered a criminal. Why the Abyssal Guard continues to let her "help" in investigations also remains a mystery, since she tends to hinder them more often than not.
We also have to understand that outside of the dark elven and elven zones of influence, there is often an association of mixed races. A good example of this is the wishing well, or just look at any castle siege. While this may be game mechanics, its something to be considered when wondering if you should be associated with someone of an "enemy" race.

This is a very good point. Some people in the clan feel uncomfortable with being thought of in a negative light or forcing their characters into something like that. I know that several characters in the Abyssal Guard have their own moral standings outside of the church that don't always agree. (Esmera and Tregarde are the ones I am thinking of, just off the top of my head.) And others are in the clan for personal reasons that aren't necescarily the same as the church, as a whole. (Me, and formerly Mehrunes.)
I think the Abyssal Guard has evolved into more than just a part of the church - we are a band that supports each other above even the church law. And most of us, when it comes time or when we realize the absolute bottom of what the shillen church is capable of, will do what we think is right - as everyone strives to do. Most of the dark elves in the clan are not just out for themselves - as often is a typical personality trait of dark elves - or out for their own gain. We all entered the Abyssal Guard not just as an extension of the church, but to help each other.
Anyways, cutesy or vomit-inducing as it may be, that's how I view what we have become. I know many would not want to participate in a sacrifice even if it was for the gain of the Shillen Temple.
