Kaelir slumped forward in the chair – barely conscious. Her hands clenched around the arms of the chair, occasionally pushing against the straps that held her. In the dark room in Hardin’s, she looked like a ghost. Her hair was damp with sweat – palely illuminated against her face.
“I have the papers right here, sir,” a man said. Kaelir saw the distant shapes in front of her like wraiths. Two necromancers, a man and a woman.
The woman leafed through the huge stack of documents. “Kaelir De Undriel,” she said. “was a young wizard of the magistrate – daughter of Kalypso Kale and Lucilen De Undriel. Kalypso we have also been following for some time before she died during a dark elven raid..”
“Boring,” one of the necromancers said, rolling his eyes. He cracked his white knuckles as he looked at Kaelir, his luminous eyes seeming to shift inside of his brain for only a second, before he came closer to her. He put one hand underneath her chin, lifting her head up. “Tell me what makes her important.”
The woman folded the papers, looking at the man through her half moon glasses. “She has uncontrollable telepathy – missing memories, hidden memories.”
The man’s hand moved up to her forehead and then ran through her damp hair. “They cut into her memories, they cut into her brain. They created her to be a weapon. And such a… beautiful weapon she is.”
The woman raised an eyebrow. “We have in our records that the Eye of Shillen took her from her homeland, reversed her memories – created false ones. Also, it has been determined that she returned from the dead after physical trauma. Her blood has the magical quality of a unicorn. So that means…”
“A transfusion,” the man said. “She drank the blood of her unicorn – to prevent death. It saved her, gave her a tie to this world.”
”Yes,” the woman said. “She is..”
“Home!” Kaelir said with a start, jumping up slightly. Her eyes rolled up to look at the man, pleading. “Home! Just let me go home... Where is it? Please!”
The man continued to pet her head. “Just a little while longer, baby. Just a little while longer” He looked up at the woman. “What else?”
“It’s really only a matter of time. Her mental state is deteriorating at a rapid rate. “
The man touched one of the magically bonded cat ears on Kaelir’s head lightly. “What is this?”
“It was given to her by a prophet named Kirindel. We’ve been following him as well for some time. He’s taken an interest in Kaelir’s well being. That might be good for her – at least for a while.”
“I can understand why he’d take an interest in her,” he said softly, and his free hand ran down kaelir’s thigh, and up her skirt. “I can say I have too.” Kaelir twitched, her head falling forward.
The woman bit her lip. “Sir, she isn’t to be played with.”
“Oh, but that’s all that anyone has ever done. Played with her. The Eyes of Shillen, The Echoes, the Eventide Sentries. She is going to prove very useful – to whoever takes advantage of her unique… assets.” He knelt and whispered to Kaelir. “You can do a lot more than just read minds, can’t you my dear?” Kaelir did not respond.
“I’ll give her a sedative and a scanning fluid – to track her brain activities magically, and more thoroughly,” the woman said. “She should wake up thinking this was nothing more but a bad dream – and I’ll get the servants to carry her back to her bed.”
“Yes, do that,” the man said. “We need to study her more. But for now – let her pretend she has a choice in her life. It won’t last long.”
